Structural BIM modeling the intelligent digital foundation for efficient structural coordination

At KAMON & CO. we develop structural BIM models tailored to the specific needs of each project, based on the required Level of Development (LOD) and the modeling standards set by the client or by the BIM methodology in use.

What is structural BIM modeling?

More than a 3D model, a digital platform

Structural BIM modeling is the process of building an intelligent three-dimensional model that represents every structural element of a building through parametric objects carrying technical information. Unlike conventional CAD drafting, a BIM model does not only describe the geometry of the structure: it organizes the information needed to support multidisciplinary coordination, improve the visualization of the project and maintain a single, reliable source of information.

What a structural model looks like

Views of structural models developed by the KAMON & CO. team. Tap any sheet to see it in detail.

  • Complete model

Towers on a podium with a piled foundation slab, in a single model.

  • Foundation

A core pile cap on piles, with the reinforcement broken down by bar type.

  • Column by level

Reinforcement elevation and 3D view of a column with its beams at each level.

Level of development

One connection, four levels

A column meeting its beams and slab, modeled at each LOD. Tap a level to see it.

  1. A basic model for preliminary studies and initial visualization.

  2. An approximate representation of the structural elements for early coordination.

  3. An accurate model with final dimensions and locations for project development.

  4. A higher level of detail to coordinate connections and clashes between disciplines: here, a duct sleeve through the beam.

From element to modelStructural model by element type: foundations, columns, slabs and core, through to the complete concrete frame.

Advantages

Why model in BIM with ?

  • Clashes caught early

At LOD 350, the model shows conflicts with architecture and MEP before construction, not on site.

  • True to the information

Every element is modeled from the project drawings; when two documents disagree, it is reported before moving on.

  • Data in every element

Columns, beams, walls and foundations carry parameters and materials: the model can be queried, filtered and quantified.

  • Ready to federate

Delivered in RVT, IFC and NWC, organized to integrate with Navisworks and other platforms without rework.

  • A base for what comes next

The same model later supports drawings, quantity takeoffs, 4D and 5D, without redrawing the structure.

Frequently asked questions

What information do I need to provide?

Structural drawings, architectural models, technical specifications and any documentation needed to develop the model. The quality and accuracy of the model depend directly on the information provided.

What level of detail (LOD) do I need?

LOD 100 (conceptual): a basic model for preliminary studies and initial visualization. LOD 200 (general): an approximate representation of the structural elements for early coordination. LOD 300 (detailed): an accurate model with final dimensions and locations for project development. LOD 350 (coordination): a higher level of detail to coordinate connections and clashes between disciplines.

Does the service include structural analysis and design?

No. Structural analysis and design are a separate service within the KAMON & CO. portfolio. This service covers the development of the structural BIM model only.

Does the service include structural drawings?

No. Structural drawings are a separate service, as are As-Built models and structural quantity takeoffs.

What is the difference between CAD and BIM?

CAD produces two-dimensional drawings, while BIM builds an intelligent three-dimensional model with integrated information that supports project coordination and management.

Which delivery formats do you offer?

Depending on the scope, we deliver models in RVT, IFC and NWC. The native model is delivered in Revit 2026 or later, and IFC for other platforms.

Can the model be used for BIM coordination?

Yes. Our models are built to integrate with Architecture, MEP and other disciplines in BIM coordination workflows. We work with Autodesk Revit and Navisworks, and with Autodesk BIM Collaborate and Autodesk Construction Cloud when applicable.

How is the service quoted and how long does it take?

The quote considers the project area, structural complexity, Level of Development (LOD), requested scope and required deliverables. The timeline depends on the size of the project or the date the client needs: we assess the scope and confirm in the quote whether it can be met. We reply to every inquiry in under 24 business hours, and a formal quote takes 1 to 2 business weeks.

Does the model check structural code compliance?

We model to the codes and delivery standards of each project and verify the consistency of the model. The structural design and its approval remain with the engineer of record. Where information is inconsistent or missing, we request technical validation before moving forward.

Do you work with clients outside Colombia?

Yes. We are a fully remote firm: we receive the information online and deliver in RVT or IFC. When the project requires it, we sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) before receiving any information.
